At ReEmployAbility, we believe in the power of giving back to the community. Two of our dedicated Placement Specialists, Tammy Byers and Grace Sizemore, recently spent time volunteering at a local nonprofit partner of ReEmployAbility, Mulberry Community Service Center in Mulberry, FL. Their experiences highlight the impact of small acts of service and the profound ways in which volunteering can shape our understanding of community challenges.
A Commitment to Service
For Tammy, this was her third year volunteering with the nonprofit, and each time, she has been inspired by the organization’s mission. “They put clothes and food in the hands of those in need and even help with housing,” she shared. Witnessing the tangible good that Mulberry Community Service Center does keeps her coming back year after year.
Grace was drawn to volunteer because of the nonprofit’s dedication to supporting the community in times of crisis. She was particularly moved by the efforts of Jennifer, the Volunteer Coordinator, who goes above and beyond to assist individuals facing hardships such as homelessness and food insecurity.
Both Tammy and Grace had memorable experiences during their time volunteering. Tammy connected with a Transition2Work participant named Leandra, who was not only giving back to the community but also using her time at the center to earn a tax certification. “She says, ‘THANK YOU, ReEmployAbility, for sending me here,’” Tammy recalled. The nonprofit’s commitment to offering educational opportunities alongside community service made a lasting impression on her.

For Grace, volunteering was deeply personal. Having been temporarily displaced due to Hurricane Milton, she empathized with those still struggling with the aftermath of natural disasters. “Jennifer was working to get FEMA funding and even helped someone secure a hotel after they lost their home. It really opened my eyes to how disasters continue to impact underprivileged communities long after the storm has passed.”
Changing Perspectives
Through their volunteer work, Tammy and Grace gained a deeper understanding of the challenges many individuals face. Tammy, who assisted in the thrift store and food distribution, reflected, “There was a time in my life when I needed help. Now I can give back.” Grace’s experience reinforced how lasting the effects of homelessness and disaster relief can be. “There are so many people still struggling long after these events. Seeing the nonprofit step in to help made me truly appreciate the work they do.”
Both volunteers had a simple yet powerful message for those considering volunteering: every little effort counts. “You meet such great people. It is such a good feeling giving back,” Tammy said. Grace encouraged first-time volunteers to engage with the people they’re helping. “Talking to the individuals in the organization and those benefiting from it widens your perspective on the world and helps you understand experiences you might not have been aware of.”
A Lasting Impact
Beyond just giving their time, Tammy and Grace witnessed firsthand how volunteering can also create opportunities for personal growth. Grace was particularly impressed that one volunteer was able to develop new skills in tax preparation and data entry, potentially advancing their career while serving the community. The Mulberry Community Service Center continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those in need, and we’re proud that our team members are part of that mission. Their stories remind us that even small acts of kindness can contribute to meaningful change.
