For families transitioning out of homelessness, walking into a clean, fully furnished home can be a turning point. This month, ReEmployAbility team member Andrea Harlow volunteered with House N2 Home in Ypsilanti, Michigan, an organization that turns empty houses and apartments into welcoming spaces that give families a stronger foundation as they move forward.

At the core of House N2 Home’s mission is restoring dignity through environment. By providing clean, thoughtfully selected furniture and household items, the organization creates spaces that feel stable, comfortable, and truly livable, giving families a stronger foundation as they move forward.

During her time on site, Andrea supported these efforts firsthand, contributing to the work that prepares each home for the families who will soon walk through the door.

Andrea was especially drawn not only to the impact, but to how it all began. “I loved what they do for the community and the story of how it all started by a few women on their own,” she shared. “That grassroots foundation made the experience feel even more meaningful and personal.”

How Andrea Supported Home Preparation and Warehouse Operations

Throughout her time volunteering, Andrea supported a range of behind-the-scenes efforts that make House N2 Home’s work possible. Working in the warehouse, she cleaned, measured, and prepared donated carpets so they would be ready for use. She also completed several loads of laundry, folding and organizing items so they could be distributed in excellent condition.

A meaningful part of the experience was selecting furnishings for an apartment that would soon welcome a single mother and her 14-year-old son. Thoughtfully choosing items to help create a comfortable and functional living space highlighted the care that goes into every home setup.

In addition to these tasks, Andrea helped organize and move inventory throughout the warehouse, supporting a system that ensures donations can be processed efficiently. While the organization receives generous community support, she noted that volunteer time is essential to sort, clean, and prepare those items so they can truly make an impact.

Furnishing Homes with Quality, Not Just Necessities

Although much of the effort takes place behind the scenes, the impact is immediate and meaningful. Every item cleaned and prepared contributes to a home that feels welcoming, not temporary.

For Andrea, the most rewarding part was knowing the quality of what families receive. “Knowing that someone was going to get items that are not just hand-me-downs, but good, clean, almost new things,” she shared.

That attention to detail reflects a deeper level of care and respect. It helps ensure that families are not just receiving necessities, but entering a space that supports their well-being and sense of pride.

What Volunteering with House N2 Home Taught Her

The experience also offered a lasting perspective. “It helps me be grateful for what I have and always remember to help others,” Andrea reflected. “You never know people’s story, so don’t judge, just be there to offer what you can.”

She saw firsthand how even a small contribution can create meaningful progress. Because of the additional help, the team was able to assist one more family. That moment reinforced how individual efforts come together to create something much larger.

Andrea shared a simple message for others considering volunteering. “Don’t wait, just do it. It is amazing.” She also noted that House N2 Home offers a variety of ways to get involved, making it easy for people to contribute in ways that align with their strengths.

Why Hands-On Volunteering Makes a Difference

Volunteering with House N2 Home left a lasting impression. From preparing donated items to helping furnish a home, Andrea’s efforts directly supported a family taking an important step forward.

The experience is a reminder that meaningful community impact often comes from consistent, hands-on support and a willingness to show up with purpose. We are grateful to House N2 Home for the opportunity to support their mission and proud of Andrea for continuing to put our values into action in the community.
