About LifeNet4Families: A Broward County Nonprofit Fighting Hunger and Homelessness
Based in Fort Lauderdale and serving communities across Broward County, LifeNet4Families exists to help individuals and families overcome barriers related to hunger, homelessness, food insecurity, and economic hardship. Guided by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, the organization provides a wide range of services designed to address both immediate needs and long-term stability.
Today, those services include case management, government assistance support, driver’s license assistance, workforce readiness resources, daily meal programs, clothing assistance, housing resources, showers, and mail services. By meeting people where they are and connecting them with the resources they need, LifeNet4Families serves as a critical support system for both housed and unhoused individuals throughout Broward County.
Although the organization operates with a staff of approximately 11 to 12 employees, its impact extends far beyond what a small team could accomplish alone. Volunteers play an essential role in delivering services and supporting daily operations, helping the nonprofit reach hundreds of individuals and families each day.
The organization’s leadership has also earned national recognition. Denise Brown, President and CEO of LifeNet4Families, was recently featured in Feeding America’s Black History Month campaign highlighting changemakers in hunger relief.
How LifeNet4Families Addresses Food Insecurity Through Community Support Services
Food insecurity affects individuals and families throughout South Florida, often creating challenges that extend beyond a lack of access to meals. Many people facing food insecurity also struggle with housing instability, transportation barriers, employment challenges, and access to essential resources. Through its comprehensive approach to service, LifeNet4Families helps address these interconnected needs while supporting long-term stability.
Whether someone visits for a hot meal, clothing assistance, workforce readiness support, or guidance navigating available resources, the organization’s mission remains the same: helping people move forward. How the LifeNet4Families and Transition2Work Partnership Supports Community Impact
One of the partnerships helping LifeNet4Families extend its reach is ReEmployAbility’s Transition2Work® program. To date, the organization has hosted more than 60 injured worker volunteers through the program, placing them in transitional duty assignments that support operations throughout the nonprofit.
Volunteers assist in a variety of areas, including the food pantry, clothing room, front desk, and donation pickup routes. Their contributions help maintain consistency across daily operations and provide valuable support for an organization working to meet growing community needs with limited resources.
According to Luciano Todeschini, Board Secretary of LifeNet4Families, the partnership provides benefits that extend well beyond volunteer hours.
“Partnerships like this make it easier for us to provide our services because we have consistency in the people who come in to deliver them. It lets us reshuffle our limited resources away from overhead so more dollars can go directly into the services our community needs.”
By supporting day-to-day operations, Transition2Work volunteers help create additional capacity for the organization to focus on its mission and the individuals it serves. Volunteers are thoughtfully matched to assignments that align with their abilities and restrictions, creating opportunities for meaningful contribution during recovery while expanding community impact across Broward County.
Building a Volunteer Culture That Feels Like Family
For Lynnette Vaughn, Community Relations Manager at LifeNet4Families, the relationship with Transition2Work volunteers goes far beyond a traditional volunteer experience.
From the moment a volunteer arrives, the organization’s team takes time to understand their strengths, introduce them to the mission, and help them find ways to make a meaningful impact. The goal is not simply to fill a role but to create an environment where people feel valued, connected, and invested in serving others.
“They become like extended family to us. We take them in as we would a new employee starting to work at LifeNet4Families. We begin to mold them, educate them, and teach them the different areas, and we come together as a unit, aligned with the same mission of serving the community and those who come in needing resources.”
That sense of belonging is a powerful example of nonprofit volunteer engagement at work. Volunteers become invested not only in the organization’s mission but also in the people it serves. Over time, many develop relationships that leave a lasting impression long after their assignments end.
As Luciano Todeschini describes it, the partnership reflects the simple but powerful concept of neighbors helping neighbors.
How Volunteer Opportunities Can Create Lasting Change
The impact of meaningful volunteer opportunities often extends well beyond the nonprofit itself, and one volunteer’s story illustrates how transformative the experience can be.
Lynnette Vaughn recalls a volunteer who arrived at LifeNet4Families reluctant to participate. Day after day, he expressed that he did not want to be there. Rather than focusing on his resistance, the team encouraged him to engage with clients, hear their stories, and see firsthand the challenges they faced.
Over time, his perspective began to change.
“His attitude started to change, and he started going out and telling his family and friends about LifeNet4Families and the clients. By the end of his assignment, I asked him what he was going to miss most, and he said the clients.”
Even after his assignment ended, his connection to the organization remained. Three months later, he was still calling the nonprofit and bringing donations of clothing and shoes to support its mission.
Stories like this demonstrate how volunteer opportunities can benefit both the organization and the individuals who serve. According to Luciano Todeschini, volunteers often leave with as much as they give.
“I truly wonder who leaves our campus more impacted, the client who came in to receive a service or the volunteer who came in thinking they were there to provide one. They don’t realize they are also leaving with impact they received back from our clients and our organization.”
Strengthening the Broward County Community Through the Transition2Work Partnership
The partnership between ReEmployAbility and LifeNet4Families demonstrates how nonprofit partnerships can create far-reaching community impact. For injured worker volunteers, participation provides purpose, connection, and an opportunity to contribute to something meaningful during recovery.
Most importantly, the Broward County community benefits. Every volunteer hour helps expand access to food assistance, housing resources, workforce readiness services, and other forms of community support that help individuals and families move toward stability.
When asked what she would tell other nonprofit organizations considering a Transition2Work partnership, Lynnette Vaughn offers simple but powerful advice:
“Don’t single out someone because of a restriction. Once we looked at what our volunteers could do, we found new projects for them, and they helped us succeed and get more done.”
