Today, as we honor the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our nation, we are featuring our Transition2Work nonprofit partner, Disabled Veterans Charities. ReEmployAbility is proud to partner with DVC to support its mission of service to our veteran community. By focusing on the capabilities of injured workers, together we can continue to positively impact the lives of our participants and local communities.

About Disabled Veterans Charities

Disabled Veterans Charities (DVC) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit charity based in Southern California that operates thrift stores to raise funds in support of the veteran community. Established in 1968 as Disabled American Charities of San Gabriel Valley, the organization has since grown beyond its original Pasadena, California location to include four large thrift store facilities. Each DVCs thrift shops provides over 12,000 square feet of merchandise such as clothing, housewares, and small furniture items.

The mission of DVC is, “to assist disabled and needy veterans… by operating thrift stores, the proceeds of which provide physical and mental rehabilitation programs and other charitable veteran-related projects.” In recent years, DVC has provided substantial support to veterans’ organizations such as US Vets, Union Rescue Mission, DAV Chapter 22, and New Directions, Inc. Grants and partnerships with these initiatives have helped provide housing for homeless and at-risk veterans and their families, reintegration services such as counseling, employment assistance, and job placement, and advocacy and assistance with veteran-related issues.

Transition2Work Partnership

DVC is one of over one-hundred Veteran-related local and national nonprofit agencies across the US that partners with ReEmployAbility through its Transition2Work nonprofit light duty placement program. Our partnership began in 2011 and DVC has since helped our program’s injured workers transition to productive work by hosting nearly 70 volunteers at its Baldwin Park, Long Beach, and San Bernadino locations. While in placement with DVC, program participants have served in roles such as Donation Attendants, Thrift Store Associates, and Facility Assistants.

“Volunteers are very important to our organization,” says Jill Willinger, Manager of DVC Thrift Shop at Long Beach. “[The transitional workers participating in Transition2Work] provide assistance to my staff in sorting, hanging, putting racks of clothes away on the sales floor, keeping the store organized, and in some cases they even provide customer service… They are a tremendous help.”
