In this month’s Nonprofit Spotlight, we are proud to recognize the Fayette Community Library, a community-centered organization dedicated to fostering curiosity, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections in Fayette, Iowa. Guided by its mission to provide materials, services, and programming that encourage the pursuit of knowledge, the library serves as a vital resource where education and community come together.
A Legacy of Learning and Community Support
The Fayette Community Library has a rich history rooted in collaboration and resilience. First envisioned in 1934 by members of the Shakespeare Club, the library grew from a grassroots effort supported largely by local organizations, volunteers, and community members—many of them women who led early fundraising and organizing initiatives.
Despite challenges, including a devastating fire in 1943 that destroyed the original library, the community rallied together to rebuild. Contributions from local families and organizations made it possible to open a new facility in 1952, setting the foundation for decades of growth. Over time, the library expanded its space, modernized its infrastructure, and adapted to meet evolving community needs—adding fine arts spaces, digital resources, and a large community meeting area that continues to host local events today.
Today, the Fayette Community Library remains a cornerstone of the community, offering access not only to an extensive collection of materials but also to programs and services that support learners of all ages. From children’s reading spaces to technology access and community programming, the library plays a key role in enhancing quality of life and providing opportunities for personal growth and enrichment.
A Partnership That Brings Purpose to Recovery
The library’s impact is further strengthened through its partnership with ReEmployAbility’s Transition2Work® program, which connects injured workers with volunteer opportunities as they recover and prepare to return to the workforce.
Under the leadership of Library Director Annette Butikofer, the Fayette Community Library has hosted multiple Transition2Work participants who have contributed their time, skills, and dedication in meaningful ways. From organizing and cleaning to supporting social media efforts and even completing a full inventory of the library, these volunteers have consistently gone above and beyond.
As Annette shared, “I have had volunteers through ReEmployAbility five times, and they have all brought different talents and have been great workers. They’ve been willing to go above and beyond—seeing what needs to be done and just taking care of it.”
She also noted the lasting impact these experiences can have, with one participant even returning to volunteer again during a later recovery period—demonstrating the positive, supportive environment the library fosters.

By welcoming Transition2Work participants and empowering them to contribute in meaningful ways, the library not only advances its mission but also supports individuals on their journey back to work and confidence.
