This month, ReEmployAbility team members came together to support Feeding Tampa Bay, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing food insecurity and building stronger communities across West Central Florida.

A group of employees, including Jonathan Graham, Bryan Chase, Millie Gonzalez, Lexi Myers, and Sarai Quirino, volunteered their time at Feeding Tampa Bay’s main distribution center, contributing to a large-scale effort that helps provide food to families across a ten-county region. Their combined efforts supported an operation that reaches thousands of individuals and families every day.

Supporting a Mission That Matters

Feeding Tampa Bay’s work goes beyond food distribution. The organization focuses on creating long-term solutions that address the root causes of hunger while also meeting immediate needs. This balance between relief and lasting impact is what drew many of the team members to volunteer.

For Millie, the mission strongly aligns with her personal commitment to service. “It’s especially meaningful to support organizations like Feeding Tampa Bay that are not only addressing immediate needs by providing food, but also working toward breaking the cycle of hunger,” she shared.

Jonathan echoed this perspective, noting that food insecurity remains a significant issue in the United States. His previous experience volunteering at a soup kitchen during his time in the U.S. Air Force shaped his appreciation for organizations like Feeding Tampa Bay, whose work continues to make a tangible difference for families in need. He described the experience as both humbling and grounding, reinforcing the importance of giving back and not taking everyday necessities for granted.

A Coordinated, Hands-On Effort

Volunteers stepped into a highly organized warehouse environment where every task plays a role in a much larger operation. After a brief orientation, the team joined an assembly line in the cooler, where each station focused on a specific food item.

Millie, Sarai, and the group worked alongside other volunteers to bag fresh produce including squash, sweet potatoes, corn, and onions. The process required coordination, consistency, and teamwork to maintain efficiency and ensure each bag was properly filled. Sarai shared, “We packed 600 bags of produce. Knowing we were helping families in need made it even more meaningful.”

Jonathan and Bryan took on the task of distributing corn, moving through approximately 35 boxes during their shift. The pace remained steady as volunteers worked together to keep the line moving and maximize output.

The day continued with a second shift focused on sorting and palletizing bread products such as buns, English muffins, and loaves. These items were organized and prepared for distribution to local partner agencies and community sites throughout the region.

From Effort to Impact

By the end of the day, the scale and impact of the team’s contribution were clear. Their work directly supported Feeding Tampa Bay’s ability to provide meals to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

Millie reflected on the results of their shift: “By the end, we sorted approximately 4,800 pounds of food, filling 600 bags. It really showed how a few hours of giving back can make a significant difference.”

Across both shifts, volunteers collectively processed approximately 9,200 pounds of food. That total equates to thousands of meals that will reach families throughout West Central Florida.

Jonathan highlighted how impactful it was to hear production totals at the end of each shift. Knowing exactly how much food had been prepared reinforced the importance of each individual task and how quickly a group effort can translate into meaningful results.

Beyond the physical work, the experience provided a deeper perspective on the scale of food insecurity in the community. Seeing the volume of food being processed and understanding how many people rely on these services brought the issue into sharper focus.

“It opened my eyes to how big the need is in our community,” Millie said. “It gave me a deeper appreciation for the role organizations like this play and the importance of giving back whenever we can.”

Sarai shared a similar takeaway, emphasizing the importance of collective effort. “They need all the help they can get, as they support so many people,” she noted.

Jonathan also reflected on the broader reach of Feeding Tampa Bay’s work, noting that the main distribution center helps supply food to multiple counties across the region. Understanding how the warehouse connects to a larger network of community partners highlighted just how far each contribution extends.

Connection Through Service

While the measurable impact was significant, the experience also left a personal impression on those who volunteered. Working side by side in a fast-paced environment encouraged collaboration and strengthened relationships outside of the usual work setting.

“It was rewarding to work alongside other volunteers and know we were all there for the same purpose,” Sarai shared.

Millie added that seeing the team come together in a new environment was a standout moment. The shared effort not only supported the community but also reinforced a sense of unity and teamwork.

Jonathan noted that volunteering provides a different kind of perspective. It offers an opportunity to slow down, focus on what matters, and appreciate both the work being done and the people around you.

Each volunteer walked away with a clear message for others considering giving back. Volunteering does not require special skills, just a willingness to help and an open mindset.

“Even a few hours of volunteering can add up to something bigger and make a real difference,” Millie shared.

Sarai’s advice was equally simple: “Go in with an open heart and give it your all.”

Jonathan emphasized that Feeding Tampa Bay is especially welcoming for first-time volunteers, with a structured and organized process that makes it easy to get involved and contribute from day one.

Continuing the Commitment

Volunteering with Feeding Tampa Bay left a lasting impression on everyone involved. From assembling hundreds of produce bags to sorting thousands of pounds of food, the team’s efforts directly supported families across the region.

More importantly, the experience reinforced the impact that can be made when people come together with intention and care. It serves as a reminder that addressing challenges like food insecurity requires both large-scale coordination and small, consistent acts of service.

We are grateful to Feeding Tampa Bay for the opportunity to support their mission and proud of our ReEmployAbility team members for continuing to put our values into action within the community.
