In the heart of Tampa Bay, there’s a ripple effect of enthusiasm and passion for sailing, especially when it comes to the Tampa Sailing Squadron Youth Sailing program. This vibrant nonprofit not only casts its sails into the wind but also fosters a community-driven spirit that captures the heart of one dedicated volunteer, ReEmployAbility’s Account Manager Team Lead Mike May.
Choosing the Course
Mike, who is also a proud member of the Tampa Sailing Squadron, found a calling in contributing to the Youth Sailing program. The decision was fueled by a desire to impart the art of sailing to youngsters aged six and older. Reflecting on the missed opportunity to learn sailing at a young age, joining the Tampa Sailing Squadron became a fulfilling way to bridge that gap for Mike.

Navigating the Waters of Contribution
Mike’s journey unfolded through various tasks and responsibilities within the TSS Youth Sailing program. With sailboats like Sunfish, Zests, Lasers, and Pixels dotting the horizon, Mike found his niche in repairing sails and rigging on Sunfish, Zest, and Laser sailboats.
A labor of love, he meticulously sorted through over 15 rigs, consisting of sails and spars, assembling a dozen to be used for fundraising purposes. The proceeds from the sale of these assembled rigs contribute directly to the Youth Sailing program, ensuring that the winds of support keep propelling the organization forward.
Asked about recommending the Tampa Sailing Squadron to potential volunteers, our dedicated sailor resoundingly endorses the experience. The organization’s unique strength lies in being member-run, where every individual is not just helpful but passionately committed to sailing and passing on their knowledge to future generations.
For those with a penchant for the open sea and a love for sailing, the Tampa Sailing Squadron beckons as a beacon of community, learning, and shared passion.

Beyond the Horizon
Beyond the fulfilling volunteering experience, the Tampa Sailing Squadron extends an invitation to the public every weekend. With regular sailboat races and quarterly hosting of large regattas, the organization pulsates with activity, creating a dynamic space for sailing enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
In the logbook of life, Mike’s chapter with the Tampa Sailing Squadron stands as a testament to the transformative power of giving back, creating a ripple effect that echoes through the waves of community, learning, and shared passion.
