The American Cancer Society

Accompanied by the Floridian humidity, a committed team of ReEmployAbility employees came together on the lawn of Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium for a charity walk. The American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” is a nationwide fundraising event held across the country. The aim of the “Relay for Life” is to raise funds for those who have been affected by cancer, giving them dignity in their fight, and recognizing the impact of cancer for all individuals touched by it.

The American Cancer Society, founded over 100 years ago in 1913, is a leader in cancer research, investing more than $400 million in cancer research grants. Their work includes:

  • Ensuring access to quality care for cancer patients.
  • Working on public policy.
  • Providing support for patients.

The Impact of The Relay for Life

The “Relay for Life” event was held in Tampa on Saturday, March 2nd, from 3 pm to 5 am. It aimed to unite people, teams, and businesses across the Tampa Bay Region. ReEmployAbility’s team was easily recognizable in their signature purple and can-do spirit, ready to work together for the cause.

Dotted throughout the stadium, participants could see performance stages, tents, teams dressed in matching outfits, and the enthusiasm of groups coming together for a compelling cause. The event brought hundreds of people out, participating in fun activities like walking backward around the track, braving the open Karaoke mics, while indulging in games or treats to raise funds. The atmosphere was joyful and purposeful as the hours marched on.

Relay for Life is an all-night event that aims to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer and honor individuals affected. Throughout the event, there is recognition of those who are currently going through a cancer battle, caretakers for those affected by cancer, and memorials for those who lost their lives. As the sun set on the stadium, the Luminaria Ceremony began to remember those who have been lost to cancer and reflect on their journey. All these events focus on the vital work of the organization. The funds raised by events such as the Relay for Life enable the American Cancer Society to continue its work and stand as a testament to what can be achieved when people work together.

Coming Together in Solidarity

This fundraiser was not just another corporate volunteer event, employees graciously came together to support Amber, an associate at ReEmployAbility who battled colon cancer as a young adult and now gives back to the organization. After sharing her story, associates rallied to support an organization dear to her heart. Thirty-two ReEmployAbility employees signed up to support ReEmployAbility’s Relay for Life Team; others who were unable to participate assisted with the fundraising process, posting on social media, and reaching out to family members.

On the day of the event, co-workers brought along loved ones, friends, family members, and children to participate- standing together in solidarity with Amber and all those that cancer has touched. It, truly, was a communal effort; a testament to unity.

In regards to her advocacy, Amber said: “Following my cancer diagnosis and remission, I dedicated myself to advocating for individuals and their caretakers facing cancer. After facing so much, I wanted to give back as much as I could. I have been so blessed to be a part of a compassionate company that prioritizes community service and to have found such supportive coworkers. Thank you to ReEmployAbility and my co-workers for supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society”

“Seeing our team come together to participate in Relay for Life in support of the American Cancer Society and a fellow colleague is truly heartwarming,” stated Debra Livingston, ReEmployAbility Founder & CEO. She continued: “Their collective effort, enthusiasm, and commitment to making a positive impact in the life of one of our own reflects the exceptional values that define our team. Their kindness, generosity, and selflessness have not only made a significant difference in the life of their fellow employee but have also strengthened the bonds within our team.”

Volunteering With A Purpose

ReEmployAbility and its employees were grateful to stand together for such a worthy cause, demonstrating the values of caring for others and creating a difference in your community. Altogether the North Tampa Relay for Life raised over $350,000 for the American Cancer Society.
