Walking through the doors of the ABC Youth Foundation on Market Street was a revelation for ReEmployAbilty’s Nonprofit Relationship Manager, Lindsey Bressi. Founded by Archie Moore, a legendary boxing figure and World Light Heavyweight champion, in 1957, the organization has been a beacon of hope for San Diego’s inner-city youth. Moore’s vision was clear: to empower young people from lower-income neighborhoods, instilling in them values of discipline, respect, and courage to navigate life’s challenges without succumbing to negative influences.

A Legacy Continued: Billy Moore’s Dedication to Community Building

For the past twenty-six years, Archie’s son, Billy Moore, has carried forward his father’s legacy with unwavering dedication. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded to a second location, reaching even more of San Diego’s youth. Central to their mission are programs designed to guide young individuals toward becoming well-rounded members of society, with boxing serving as a catalyst for personal growth and development.

The Role of Light-Duty Participants in Community Empowerment

Integral to the ABC Youth Foundation’s success are the contributions of individuals participating in ReEmployAbility’s Transition2Work program. These participants, often individuals recovering from injuries, bring with them a unique perspective and a profound desire to give back to their community. One of the Transition2Work Participants stated:

“Thank you for this.”

He said, “Your life can change in an instant. You just never know what could happen. I wasn’t expecting this – this accident to happen and change everything. I believe everything happens for a reason. But it was hard, in the beginning, to understand the reason for this happening. I’m happy, though. I can say that now. I’m recovering little by little, and I believe God sent me to this place. This place is special. They are like family. Everyone is so kind. I feel like I’m helping them. I’m learning new things and I get to interact with people and get to help them. These people are a blessing. I look forward to coming here every day. It’s like a second home. I plan to volunteer even after I go back to work, so I can keep showing my appreciation and thanks for how they have treated me.”

Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of something greater than himself. Despite facing unexpected challenges due to an accident, he found solace and purpose within the ABC Youth Foundation’s supportive environment. His sentiment echoes that of many others who have found a sense of belonging and fulfillment through their involvement with the organization.

Building Community Beyond Boundaries

The ABC Youth Foundation serves as more than just a place of refuge; it is a second home for many, a place where bonds are formed and lives are transformed. Billy Moore attests to the profound impact of these individuals, noting their continued presence and willingness to lend a helping hand even after returning to work. Their commitment speaks volumes about the enduring spirit of community that permeates the organization. Beyond physical rehabilitation, the ABC Youth Foundation offers a space for emotional healing and personal growth. Engaging with others, contributing to meaningful projects, and being part of a supportive community all play a vital role in the recovery process for participants.

A Testament to the Power of Community

In the heart of San Diego, the ABC Youth Foundation stands as a testament to the transformative power of community. Through collaboration and compassion, individuals from all walks of life come together to uplift and empower the next generation. As we celebrate the achievements of the organization and its participants, we are reminded of the profound impact that each individual can have when given the opportunity to thrive within a supportive environment.

The ABC Youth Foundation:

The program presents a positive alternative to the widespread drug and gang violence in the communities we serve. Boxers actively maintain focus and determination while collaborating with their peers and ABC’s coaches. Many people may recall our former head coach, Art Wilson, who collaborated with Billy Moore for over two decades. Together, they nurtured boxing champions and, more importantly, fostered well-rounded individuals. Our new Coach, David Torres, and other volunteer coaches currently lead the way, empowering our youth to achieve both their athletic and life goals. ABC YOUTH FOUNDATION is committed to providing resources for families to ensure a solid foundation for a healthy future.
