In the bustling city of Fort Worth, Texas, one injured worker’s life took an unexpected turn, leading him to a unique opportunity that not only supported his recovery but also allowed him to make a significant impact in his community. Initially skeptical about the Transition2Work program offered by ReEmployAbility, Matthew found himself at a community food bank, where he discovered a sense of purpose, camaraderie, and the joy of giving back. This opportunity also provided him a path towards recovery while making a difference for the people around him.

In a recent interview with ReAudio, Matthew shared his experience, emphasizing the positive impact of the Transition2Work program on his life. Todd Loomis, ReEmployAbility National Sales Manager, and ReAudio Podcast Host, joined Matthew to discuss the impact that the ReEmployAbility Transition2Work podcast had on his life after an injury. During the conversation, Matthew expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue working and receiving his full salary, especially during the challenging economic times.

Discovering a New Path with Transition2Work

Matthew, a former production associate at Fresh Point, a division of Sysco, faced a life-altering incident in February. An ice storm led to an unfortunate slip on an icy bridge, leaving Matthew with injuries that required time off from his physically demanding job. Matthew’s worries about job security and his ability to return to work were eased when he was introduced to ReEmployAbility’s Transition2Work program.

Initially hesitant, Matthew was placed in a volunteer role at a community food bank. To his surprise, this opportunity allowed him to continue working and provided him with his full salary. Matthew quickly became an integral part of the food bank’s operations by engaging in various tasks, such as intake and assisting with essential items like diapers and hygiene products. His previous experience at Fresh Point allowed him to become an asset and continue to use his skills for the community food bank. His transition to the community food bank became a story of resilience, recovery, and giving back to the community.

A Day in Matthew’s New Role at the Community Food Bank

Before his injury, Matthew worked long hours moving heavy loads of produce and meat. Now, at the Fort Worth community food bank, he engages in tasks such as intake, database management, and assisting with essential items for families in need. The food bank serves hundreds of families daily (up to 600 or more), offering food, clothing, air conditioners, and other necessities.

Matthew also highlighted the supportive and family-like environment at the food bank, “I just want to say first and foremost, these are great people. It’s a family environment”. The staff’s generosity even extended to helping him with personal needs, such as providing fans when his air conditioner failed. This sense of community and care motivated Matthew to encourage other injured workers to explore similar opportunities with Transition2Work, “I didn’t know what to think. I was worried about losing my job. Would I be able to perform my job again? I was kind of dubious about coming to work and dealing with the public. Not that I have an issue with that, but I didn’t know what to expect and I’ve been totally amazed.”

Transformative Impact on Recovery

Transitioning from a physically demanding job to a volunteer role was initially met with some apprehension. However, Matthew’s apprehension turned soon turned into appreciation. Despite initial concerns, he found fulfillment in contributing to the community. He discovered that the experience was more than just a means of recovery – a chance to rediscover himself.

Matthew’s transition to the food bank allowed him to utilize various skills beyond physical labor, showcasing his abilities in database management, public interactions, and liaison roles. The experience not only facilitated his recovery but also opened doors to networking opportunities and potential side work. When asked if Matthew would recommend this program to others, he enthused, “Well, I’ll tell them that if you can move and it doesn’t cause you too much pain to jump on it, because this has been an excellent opportunity for me personally. I’ve also met a lot of people, done a lot of networking. So there are other opportunities, not just for volunteer work.”

Looking Towards the Future

As Matthew continues his recovery journey, he acknowledges that his time at the food bank has an expiration date. Currently undergoing treatment with a pain management specialist, he anticipates returning to his regular position. Despite the impending transition, Matthew expressed a deep connection to the food bank and its mission, leaving the door open for future volunteering opportunities.

In the interview, Matthew reflected on the emotional bonds formed with the food bank staff, referring to them as family. He expressed a desire to stay connected and contribute, even after returning to his regular job. Matthew’s story serves as an inspiration to injured workers across the country, encouraging them to seize opportunities for personal and professional growth during their recovery period.

Advice for Injured Workers

Drawing from his own experience, Matthew offered advice to injured workers in similar circumstances. He emphasized the importance of staying active and seizing opportunities for growth and recovery. Acknowledging the psychological toll of extended periods of inactivity, he encouraged others to explore programs like Transition2Work, not just for financial stability but for the sense of purpose and community they provide.

Matthew’s journey with ReEmployAbility and the community food bank illustrates the transformative power of volunteering during recovery. His story serves as a testament to the positive impact such programs can have on injured workers, providing them with not only a path to recovery but also a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
